Garbage
The city’s residential guidelines set the rules for the city-issued garbage cart:
- Bag and tie all garbage, and close the lid. Bags on top of or beside the cart are not taken.
- Put the cart at the curb no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before pickup, with the front facing the street.
- Keep it at least 10 feet from yard trash, poles, mailboxes and other obstacles so the truck arm can reach it.
- No building materials, tires, dead animals or hazardous waste in the cart.
- A broken cart is repaired or replaced at no cost. An extra cart is available for an added fee.
- Moving? Leave the cart and bins at your old address. Each cart has a serial number tied to one address.
Recycling: yellow bin and blue bin
West Palm Beach uses two bins, according to the city’s What Can I Recycle page:
| Yellow bin (paper) | Blue bin (containers) |
|---|---|
| Newspapers, magazines, catalogs, mail | Plastic containers #1 to #7 |
| Office and school paper, paper bags | Steel and aluminum cans |
| All cardboard, flattened, 3 feet by 3 feet maximum | Glass bottles and jars |
| Shredded paper, in a folded brown paper bag | Drink boxes, milk and juice cartons |
Keep plastic bags, foam and food waste out of both bins. Aluminum foil and pie plates go in the garbage. New or replacement bins are ordered from the Solid Waste Authority.
Bulk items and yard waste
Bulk and yard waste share one weekly day. The city’s Yard Waste and Bulk page lists the rules:
- Bulk: up to three items a week from single-family homes: furniture, mattresses, grills, appliances and electronics. Remove appliance doors.
- More than three items is a special pickup, for a fee: email publicworks@wpb.org or call 561-822-2075.
- Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners go out on your yard waste day, next to the vegetation pile.
- Yard waste: one pile, up to 10 cubic yards (18 feet long, 4 feet wide, 4 feet high), in front of the home it came from. Bag grass and leaves. Cut limbs to 4 feet. Stumps no wider than 12 inches.
- Not collected: building and construction materials, fencing, decks, concrete, propane tanks, drums and hazardous waste. Contractors must haul their own debris; the city says an owner may be assessed up to $350 when they do not.
- New residents get a one-time courtesy pickup of moving boxes within 30 days of moving in. Call ahead, break the boxes down and tie them.
Each spring, before hurricane season, the city holds Vegetation Amnesty days when the size limit on yard waste piles is lifted. The city announces the dates each year.
